Why dragon fruit

For smoothie bowl operators.

The pitaya bowl category was built on one thing: color. Red dragon fruit delivers that color with no help from artificial dye or food coloring. But most operators are running white-flesh dragon fruit or pre-puréed pink pitaya from concentrate. Both compromises on both color and flavor.

We ship 1-inch chunks of Vietnamese red-flesh pitaya (Hylocereus costaricensis), the variety with the deepest magenta color and the cleanest tropical flavor. Flash-frozen at the farm so the color doesn't oxidize and the texture doesn't break. Blend chunks direct from the freezer. No thaw required for bowls and smoothies.

Typical case yield for a bowl operator is 280–320 portions at 2 oz of pitaya per bowl. That's 4–6 weeks of service for a growing bowl shop. Pallet pricing (120 cases) drops the cost to the point where pitaya bowls become your best-margin SKU.

Applications

Four ways operators use it.

The common builds we see from smoothie bowl operators.

01

Pure pitaya bowls

Blend 2 oz dragon fruit + 2 oz banana + 4 oz coconut water + ice. Pour into a bowl, top with granola, coconut flakes, seasonal fruit. The color does the marketing.

02

Layered bowls

Half pitaya, half açai base for a two-tone bowl. Popular with wellness-focused operators because it adds variety and visual appeal without another ingredient.

03

Blended smoothies

1–2 oz dragon fruit in a 16-oz smoothie turns it magenta instantly. Works with strawberry, banana, coconut water, mango. High perceived value for very little product cost.

04

Popsicles & frozen treats

Blend chunks into a smoothie base, pour into popsicle molds. Sell frozen. Great for summer menus and kid's programs.

Common questions

About dragon fruit for this use.

Red vs white dragon fruit for bowls?+

Red is the only choice if color is the selling point. White-flesh pitaya is milder in flavor and doesn't produce the signature magenta. All of our stock is red-flesh.

Do I need to thaw before blending?+

No. Blend direct from the freezer. The chunks are individually frozen (IQF) so they don't clump, and blending them frozen gives bowls the thick, spoonable texture customers expect.

How strong is the flavor?+

Red dragon fruit has a subtle, clean tropical flavor. Between kiwi and watermelon. It won't dominate a bowl. Its contribution is mainly color and body; flavor comes from your base fruits (banana, strawberry, mango).

What's the nutritional positioning?+

Dragon fruit is a strong 'superfruit' positioning: high in antioxidants (betacyanins), good source of fiber, and low glycemic. Pairs naturally with a health-forward bowl menu.
